Favignana & Levanzo from Marsala

Marsala is the alternative mainland port for the Egadi Islands, about forty minutes south of Trapani by road and roughly the same again north by sea. It runs nine bookable tours to Favignana and Levanzo against Trapani’s thirty-eight, and the character of that smaller market is quite different: more than half of the Marsala listings are private per-boat charters rather than per-seat tickets.

That is worth knowing before you compare prices. A Marsala listing at $1,045 is not an expensive version of a $46 ticket — it is a whole boat, and for a group of six or eight the per-head figure lands close to a shared seat from Trapani.

What Marsala gives you that Trapani does not

The Stagnone. The route north runs past the shallow lagoon between Marsala and the island of Mozia, with working salt pans and windmills along the shore. It is one of the more distinctive stretches of coast in western Sicily, and Trapani departures never see it. One operator builds a sunset aperitif there into the return leg.

A quieter morning. Trapani port in August at nine in the morning is a queue of several hundred people boarding a dozen boats. Marsala’s marina is not that. If the scrum is the part of a boat day you dread, this is the fix.

Parking you can find. Trapani’s port parking fills early in summer. Marsala’s marina is easier, though one operator specifically warns that spaces inside the marina area are limited and asks you to arrive early.

The three shapes of a Marsala day

The long shared day. Nine hours from the marina at $116 per person, and the only Marsala departure that circumnavigates Favignana properly rather than running along one side of it. Cala Azzurra, Cala Rossa, Bue Marino and the Grotta degli Innamorati, an hour ashore at Favignana harbour, then Levanzo. It is the longest day of any tour on this site.

Lunch included, no extras. Triscovery’s day at $139 includes a pane cunzato baked by the operator’s own bakers, an aperitif, the landing tax and the fuel levy — the listing states plainly that there are no fees collected on the day. Given that the Trapani mini-yacht collects €20 a head at the box office and the cheap mini-cruise collects €5, that is not nothing.

Wine on board from the people who made it. Navigare le Egadi are the Gandolfo family, and the wine poured with the aperitif is their own production. Rated 5.0 across nine guests, with a sunset stop at the Stagnone on the way home. It concentrates on Favignana and does not include Levanzo, which is the trade-off.

The private options

Marsala’s private charters are where the port’s inventory really sits: a 27-foot boat for up to twelve at $1,161 with everything included and no extras, a dinghy charter at $1,045, a luxury boat at $1,394. Should you leave from Marsala or Trapani?

If you are staying in Marsala, Mazara del Vallo or the south of the province, Marsala. If you are in Trapani, Erice or San Vito, Trapani — the extra choice and the shorter crossing outweigh the calmer marina.
